Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve

National Monument · King Salmon, Alaska

One of the most remote and least-visited units in the entire National Park System — fewer than 100 people visit each year. The 600,000-acre monument on the Alaska Peninsula preserves the massive Aniakchak Caldera, a 6-mile-wide volcanic crater that last erupted in 1931. Access is by float plane only, and the brutal weather frequently grounds aircraft for days.
