Anna Maria Island
Island · Anna Maria, Florida
Seven miles of barrier island at the mouth of Tampa Bay, split between three small cities that have all held the line on the same thing — no building may rise above three storeys, and no chain restaurant may open. The result is a strip of low cottages, a free trolley that runs the length of the island, and the last stretch of Gulf coast that looks the way the whole thing looked in 1960.
Pine Avenue, Anna Maria, Florida, 34216, United States
A public island, open always. The free trolley runs daily. Lifeguard coverage at the main beaches is seasonal.
