Annaba and Hippo Regius
Hippo Regius, A Phoenician And Later Roman Port City Where Augustine Of Hippo Served As Bishop From 395 To 430 AD And Wrote Much Of His Major Work; The Excavated Forum, Baths And Basilica Foundations Sit Below A Nineteenth Century Basilica Built In His Memory · Annaba, Annaba
Hippo Regius was a working Phoenician and then Roman port on the edge of what is now Annaba, and its one truly famous resident is Augustine, who served as its bishop from 395 to 430 AD and wrote a large share of his most influential work here before the Vandals besieged the city in his final months. What survives on the ground is a working excavation rather than a dramatic ruin: a forum, bath complexes, a theatre and basilica foundations spread across a sloped site, with mosaics in places and the clear plan of a substantial Roman town. Directly above it on the hill stands a nineteenth-century basilica built in Augustine's memory, visible from much of the excavation below and a pilgrimage point in its own right for anyone who knows his writing. The combination - a genuine Roman port town plus a direct line to one of Christianity's most important early thinkers - gives Annaba a specific, nameable draw that reaches well beyond Algeria's own tourism circuit, even though the site itself is modest next to Timgad or Djemila.

The excavation and the basilica keep separate schedules and are reached by the same general approach from central Annaba. The ruins are generally open through the daytime with a shorter winter day; the basilica above keeps its own hours around services and visiting times, and confirming the current arrangement for both locally is worth doing before planning a single combined visit. A small site museum or display area, where open, keeps shorter hours than the ruins themselves. There is no reliable vendor at the excavation; bring water from central Annaba. The site is a short taxi ride from the city centre, with no direct public transport to the gate.
