Annapolis and the United States Naval Academy
Heritage District · Annapolis, Maryland
Maryland's capital since 1694 and, for ten months in 1783 and 1784, the capital of the United States. The colonial street plan survives almost intact — two circles with streets radiating off them, brick houses, and a working harbour at the bottom of Main Street where the sailing crowd ties up. The Naval Academy occupies the point where the Severn meets the Chesapeake, ten minutes' walk from the dock, and the two halves of the town — eighteenth-century capital and modern naval institution — are the reason to come.
City Dock, Main Street, Annapolis, Maryland, 21401, United States
A town, accessible at all times. THE NAVAL ACADEMY YARD is open to visitors through Gate 1 during daytime hours; EVERY ADULT 18 AND OVER NEEDS GOVERNMENT-ISSUED PHOTO IDENTIFICATION, bags are subject to search, and the Yard can close to visitors without notice as an active military installation. Guided Academy tours are charged and run from the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center. Shops and museums keep daytime hours; restaurants run late. Commissioning Week in late May and the October boat shows fill the town completely.
