Año Nuevo State Park
State Park · Pescadero, California
Ano Nuevo State Park is on the San Mateo County coast along Highway 1, north of Santa Cruz, and is best known for its northern elephant seal colony, often described as the largest mainland breeding colony in the world. Thousands of huge seals haul out on the sand dunes to give birth, mate and molt. In the winter breeding season, from roughly December through March, you generally need a reserved guided tour to walk to the seals; outside that season there are viewing areas you may reach with a permit - confirm the rules and dates. The landscape is wild: sandy dunes, windswept bluffs and a long, soft-sand walk. An offshore island carries old buildings and is not open to visitors - confirm. Wind, fog and cold are normal, so bring a jacket. The seals are dangerous, so keep well back and follow the guides. It is a place for wildlife lovers who book early and are happy to walk, not a quick roadside stop.

California State Parks has generally opened the park for day use from morning until around sunset, with the visitor centre, tours and any seal viewing areas following their own schedule - confirm the current hours before you go. In the winter breeding season, usually December to March, access to the seals is mostly through guided tours by reservation, and tours run on set time slots, so you cannot just turn up and walk. Outside winter, viewing areas and permits may be offered on a different system, and areas can close at short notice to protect pups or molting seals. Fog can roll in and out of the coast at any hour, and Highway 1 can be affected by storms and surf. Check the State Parks page and the booking page for your date before driving, especially on weekends.
