Antelope Canyon
Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park (Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation) · Page, Arizona
Two slot canyons on Navajo land just east of Page, carved by flash floods into swirling, glowing corridors of red sandstone — among the most photographed landscapes in the world. Upper Antelope Canyon is a level walk through a tall, narrow passage where shafts of sunlight reach the floor around midday in summer; Lower Antelope Canyon is narrower and deeper, entered by steep metal stairs. Both lie within the Navajo Nation's Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park and can only be visited on a guided tour with an authorised Navajo operator. In 1997 a flash flood in Lower Antelope Canyon killed eleven visitors, and tours are cancelled whenever rain threatens.
