Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
State Park · Borrego Springs, California
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is one of the largest state parks in the lower 48, spread across the Colorado Desert of southeastern California east of San Diego, with the small town of Borrego Springs as its hub. It offers badlands, slot canyons, palm oases, big skies and in some springs a wildflower bloom that draws crowds, though the bloom depends on winter rain and varies from year to year. Summer heat tops 100 F, flash floods can follow storms, and services are limited, so it suits prepared visitors with water, a full tank and good tires. Borrego Springs is a dark-sky community, ideal for stargazing, and sculptures by Ricardo Breceda stand out in the desert on private land nearby. The park is large enough that a single day only samples it, and the drive from San Diego takes about two hours. Dirt roads vary from graded to soft sand, so match your vehicle to the route. Confirm fees, road conditions and bloom reports before you go.

The park is open year-round with no gates on most roads and trails, and primitive camping is allowed in many places along the dirt roads. The visitor center near Borrego Palm Canyon keeps daytime hours that are fullest from autumn through spring and shorter, or weekends only, in the hot months, so confirm before you drive out for maps or bloom reports. Campgrounds are busiest in winter and spring and may close or thin out in summer. Dirt and jeep roads can close after storms or flash floods, and summer afternoons are best spent indoors, so start any walk at first light.
