Apalachicola

Old Town · Apalachicola, Florida

A working Panhandle port of about two thousand people with a historic district of some nine hundred buildings, which for most of the twentieth century produced around ninety percent of Florida's oysters. John Gorrie invented mechanical refrigeration here in 1851 trying to cool yellow fever patients, and the bay he worked beside was closed to wild oyster harvesting in 2020 while the fishery was rebuilt.

Water Street, Apalachicola, Florida, 32320, United States

A public town, open always. Shops and the museum keep daytime hours and the town is quiet in the evening.
