Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

National Lakeshore · Bayfield, Wisconsin

Twenty-one islands and twelve miles of mainland shore at the top of Wisconsin, where Lake Superior has cut the red sandstone into sea caves you can paddle into in summer and, in the rare winters the lake freezes hard enough, walk into on the ice. The lakeshore holds nine light stations — the largest collection anywhere in the National Park System — and a scatter of old fishing camps and quarries. Almost everything here needs a boat, and the weather on Superior decides whether you get one.

415 Washington Avenue, Bayfield, Wisconsin, 54814, United States

Mainland areas open year-round. Island access dependent on lake ice/weather. Cruises run May-October.
