Appomattox Court House National Historical Park

Historic Site · Appomattox, Virginia

The village where Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant on 9 April 1865, in the parlour of Wilmer McLean's house. McLean had moved here from Manassas to get his family away from the fighting, which means the war began in his front yard and ended in his front room. The Park Service has restored the whole village rather than a single building, and it is a walking visit down an unpaved lane.

111 National Park Drive, Appomattox, Virginia, 24522, United States

Village and visitor centre generally 9 AM - 5 PM daily, closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Several buildings close or reduce hours in winter.
