Arabia Steamboat Museum

History Museum · Kansas City, Missouri

The cargo of the steamboat Arabia, which struck a snag and sank in the Missouri River in 1856 carrying two hundred tons of goods bound for sixteen frontier towns, and which was found in 1988 under a cornfield in Kansas after the river had moved half a mile away. The mud sealed everything airtight: boots still boxed, dishes still crated, preserved food still edible in the jar. The museum claims the largest single collection of pre-Civil War artefacts in the world, and whether or not that stands, nothing else looks like it.
