Arbor Day Farm

Estate Of The Arbor Day Foundation, At The Birthplace Of Arbor Day · Nebraska City, Nebraska

Arbor Day Farm is the Arbor Day Foundation's working estate on the edge of Nebraska City, a Missouri River town in the south-east corner of the state, roughly an hour by car from both Omaha and Lincoln. The land is tied to J. Sterling Morton, the newspaper editor and politician who proposed a tree-planting day for treeless Nebraska; the first Arbor Day was held in 1872, and the holiday spread across the country and the world from here. The farm itself, as a visitor attraction, came much later, after the Foundation was set up around the holiday's centenary. Today it combines a commercial apple and hazelnut orchard, the Apple House market selling apples, cider and baked goods in season, a family attraction called the Tree Adventure with a treehouse, woodland trails and paid add-ons, and the Lied Lodge, a timber-framed hotel and conference centre among the trees. It is a pleasant half-day for families, busiest on autumn weekends at apple time, and quiet or partly closed in winter. It is not Morton's mansion: Arbor Lodge is a separate state park nearby.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the Apple House market and the Tree Adventure open daytime hours, roughly 9 or 10 am to 5 pm, with longer days and more features running from spring to autumn and reduced hours or closures in winter; the zip line and outdoor extras run only in the warm months and stop for storms and high wind. Lied Lodge operates as a hotel all year. The traps that ruin a day are arriving in winter expecting apple picking, going to Arbor Lodge's gate by mistake, arriving at noon on an autumn Saturday or AppleJack weekend, and finding the paid extras closed for weather. Confirm current times before relying on them.
