Arcadia Round Barn
Round Barn Built 1898 By William Odor; National Register Listed, Restored By Volunteers In The 1990s · Arcadia, Oklahoma
A genuinely round barn on Route 66 at Arcadia, built in 1898 by the farmer William Odor, who soaked native burr oak boards in water and bent them into curves so that the whole structure, sixty feet across and forty-three feet high, holds together without conventional corners. It was built round in the belief that a circular barn would resist prairie winds better, and it has outlasted every other building on that stretch of road. By the 1980s the roof had collapsed, and a group of retired volunteers who called themselves the Over the Hill Gang rebuilt it through the 1990s. The ground floor holds a gift shop and Route 66 memorabilia, and the loft, with its extraordinary curved ceiling, is used for dances, weddings and music. Entry is free with donations.
