Are Ski Resort

Scandinavia'S Largest Ski Resort, On The Slopes Of Areskutan, A World Cup And World Championship Venue With A Year Round Mountain Bike And Hiking Season · Are, Jamtland County

Are is Scandinavia's largest ski resort, spread over the slopes of Areskutan, a broad mountain of about 1,420 m above the village of Are in western Jamtland. The ski area links several bases along the valley: Are By, the lively village centre with the railway station, the family-friendly Bjornen, the quieter Duved to the west, and Tegefjall between them. It has been a winter resort since the late 1800s, when the railway to Norway arrived, and it hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships in 2007 and 2019, with World Cup races most winters. Skiers come for the long vertical, the lift network, the off-piste and a real village with bars, restaurants and apres-ski. In summer it reinvents itself as one of northern Europe's biggest bike parks, with hiking on Areskutan, the Tannforsen waterfall and the Are Chokladfabrik in the village. The honest caveat: it is expensive in peak weeks, the Swedish school ski holidays pack the slopes, and December is cold and very dark, with the summit often lost in wind and cloud.

Winter: the ski season usually runs from around early or mid December to early May, with the full lift system open from about February to April; lifts generally run in the daytime, roughly 9 am to 4 pm, with longer spring afternoons and some evening floodlit skiing - check the current season dates. The summit lifts and the Kabinbanan cable car close in strong wind. Summer: the bike park, Kabinbanan and some lifts usually run from about mid June to September, weather permitting. October, November and the May to mid June gap are low season, when many restaurants and shops close. Getting there: SJ trains run direct from Stockholm to Are station in the village in about 6-7 hours, and a night train runs in the ski season; or fly to Ostersund, about 1 hour 15 minutes away by road, with airport buses in winter. Book accommodation, lift passes and ski school well ahead for Christmas, sportlov weeks and Easter.
