Arkansas Railroad Museum

A Volunteer Run Railroad Museum In The Former Cotton Belt Railroad Shops At Pine Bluff, Holding Cotton Belt Locomotive 819 A 4 8 4 Steam Locomotive Built In These Same Shops In 1942. · Pine Bluff, Arkansas

Pine Bluff was a Cotton Belt Railroad town, and the company's shops here built their own locomotives - including number 819, a 4-8-4 completed in 1942, the last steam locomotive the Cotton Belt built. It was retired, put on display, and then restored to working order by volunteers in the 1980s in the shop building that made it, which is a rare thing to be able to say about any locomotive anywhere. The museum occupies that shop, with 819 as the centrepiece and a yard of rolling stock, cabooses and railway equipment around it. It is volunteer-run, free or nearly so, and it is one of very few reasons a visitor stops in Pine Bluff.

Open on limited days, typically several weekdays and Saturday, on daytime hours, and run entirely by volunteers - so hours vary and the museum can close at short notice. Admission is free or a nominal donation. Confirm opening before travelling; this is the single most important thing to check for a volunteer-staffed museum in a city with little other visitor infrastructure.
