Armenian Church of the Holy Resurrection

Church · Dhaka, Dhaka

The 1781 church of Dhaka's vanished Armenian merchant colony, standing white and improbable in the Armanitola lanes that still carry the community's name. The Armenians ran jute, leather and trade houses here for two centuries before dwindling away; their church survives with its bell tower, pews and a churchyard of some hundreds of graves whose inscriptions - Yerevan to Dhaka - tell the whole diaspora story. There is no congregation left and no reliable schedule: the gate is usually locked, a caretaker opens it for visitors who ring, knock and wait, and occasional services are held when clergy visit. The row grades that reality rather than the postcard.

Armanitola Church Lane, Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh

No posted hours exist: the gate is normally locked and opens at the caretaker's discretion for visitors who ring, knock and wait - daytime attempts (mid-morning to afternoon) succeed most often, some days not at all, and no schedule is promised here because none exists. Occasional services by visiting clergy are informally announced.
