Art Gallery of Ontario
One Of The Largest Art Museums In North America, Rebuilt By Frank Gehry In 2008 In The Neighbourhood He Grew Up In, Holding The Most Comprehensive Collection Of Canadian Art Anywhere · Toronto, Ontario
Frank Gehry grew up a few streets from here, and when the AGO was rebuilt in 2008 he did something unlike the rest of his work - instead of a spectacle he wrapped the Dundas Street frontage in a long curving wall of glass and Douglas fir, and put a spiral staircase of the same timber through the back of the building. It is his only major commission in his own home city. Inside is the LARGEST COLLECTION OF CANADIAN ART ANYWHERE - the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson in depth, Emily Carr, David Milne - alongside the Thomson Collection given by Ken Thomson, which includes European painting, an extraordinary holding of ship models and Bernini's terracotta modello. There is a large and seriously presented collection of Indigenous and Canadian art rehung in recent years, and a strong contemporary programme. Around ninety-five thousand works in total. Most visitors do two or three floors and leave wishing they had started earlier in the day.
317 Dundas Street West, Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
OPEN MOST OF THE WEEK WITH AT LEAST ONE CLOSED DAY - the AGO has typically closed on Monday and run late on Wednesday, with a FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE EVENING that has historically been WEDNESDAY FROM AROUND 6PM. THE AGO ANNUAL PASS IS THE THING TO KNOW ABOUT: an annual membership has been priced close to two general admissions, and has been FREE OR HEAVILY DISCOUNTED FOR VISITORS UNDER 25 - if you are going twice, or are young, buy the pass.
