Art Institute of Chicago
Art Museum · Chicago, Illinois
One of the oldest and largest art museums in the United States, founded in 1879 and housed since 1893 in a Beaux-Arts building put up for the World's Columbian Exposition, with Renzo Piano's Modern Wing added in 2009. Its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist holdings are the strongest outside Paris, and it owns a run of paintings — Seurat's La Grande Jatte, Hopper's Nighthawks, Wood's American Gothic — that most people can picture before they arrive.
