Arthur Avenue and Belmont
Heritage District · Bronx, New York
⚠ THE REAL LITTLE ITALY, and New Yorkers will argue about it with anyone who says otherwise. Six or seven blocks of Belmont in the Bronx holding pork stores, bakeries, cheesemongers, fishmongers and a covered retail market — a working Italian-American food district rather than a preserved one, and now increasingly Albanian, Mexican and West African alongside it.
2344 Arthur Avenue, Bronx, New York, 10458, United States
An open neighbourhood — free, no gate. ⚠ IT RUNS ON FOOD-TRADE HOURS: shops open early, SEVERAL CLOSE BY MID-AFTERNOON, and SUNDAY CLOSURES ARE COMMON — a Sunday afternoon visit finds much of the street shut. Saturday morning is the fullest. The Arthur Avenue Retail Market keeps its own hours. ⚠ SEVERAL OLDER SHOPS PREFER OR REQUIRE CASH. ⚠ CHRISTMAS AND EASTER WEEKS are extraordinary and impassable. Metro-North to Fordham is faster than the subway from Manhattan.
