Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park

State Park · Lancaster, California

Arthur B. Ripley Desert Woodland State Park is a small preserve of Joshua tree and juniper woodland in the western Antelope Valley, in Los Angeles County near Lancaster. It protects a remnant of the open desert woodland that once covered more of this high desert before farms, roads and housing spread across the valley. It is a day-use park of a few hundred acres, with a very short loop trail, a parking area and little else - confirm the current facilities. Do not expect a visitor center, shade or drinking water. It suits people who want a quiet half hour among old Joshua trees, photographers after wide skies, and wildflower chasers in a good spring, when the nearby California Poppy Reserve is a separate place with its own crowds. Summers are hot and dry, wind is common, and rattlesnakes live here. Bring water and allow about an hour. The drive from Lancaster is short but through open farm country, so fuel up first and check the park page for closures before you set out.

California State Parks has generally listed small day-use units like this one as open from around sunrise to sunset, every day, with no staffed gate - confirm the posted hours on the official State Parks page before you drive out, because a park this small can be closed for maintenance, fire danger or weather with little notice. There is no ticket office and no ranger on duty most days, so no one will tell you if the road or the gate has changed. Spring is the busy season in the Antelope Valley, and the better-known poppy reserve nearby keeps its own hours and fees. Sunrise and the hour before sunset are the best times for light and cooler air, and night use is not intended.
