A nine-mile one-way loop climbing off the Death Valley floor through a wash of coloured rock, ending at Artists Palette — a hillside stained green, pink, purple and gold by oxidising metals in the volcanic ash. The road dips and twists like a fairground ride, which is why nothing over twenty-five feet is allowed on it.
