Arviat

One Of The Largest Communities In Nunavut And One Of The Southernmost On The Hudson Bay Coast, Known For Its Cultural Festivals, Drum Dancing, The Inuit Heritage In The Hudson Bay Region And In Summer Polar Bear And Beluga Viewing On The Coast. Visits Are Arranged With Local Outfitters And Need A Guide For Bear Safety. A Growing Community In A Remote Setting · Arviat, Nunavut

Arviat is an Inuit hamlet of about 2,800 people on the western shore of Hudson Bay, one of the largest communities in Nunavut and one of the southernmost on the bay. The name means place of the bowhead whale. It is reached only by scheduled flight, usually from Rankin Inlet or Winnipeg. The hamlet is known for its cultural festivals, drum dancing, carving and sewing, and for polar bears and beluga along the coast in summer and autumn. Be plain with yourself: this is a growing working community, not a sightseeing town. There is no old quarter, no bus tour and no visitor centre. Visits are arranged with local outfitters, and anyone going onto the land needs a guide for bear safety. The shore, the tundra and the sky are the draw, and the best experiences usually come from an invitation or a festival, not from a plan made in the south. Allow time and patience, and confirm every arrangement locally.

Arviat keeps no visiting hours because it is a living community. The stores, the hotel, the arts outlets and any cultural centre keep their own hours, commonly roughly 9 to 5 on weekdays with short or closed days on weekends - confirm by phone. Coastal and wildlife trips run mainly from July to October, depending on ice and bear activity. Festivals and drum dances happen on community calendars that change each year. Winter is long and very cold with fewer services. Walking the town is free at any hour, and Sundays and holidays are quiet.
