Asessippi Provincial Park lies in western Manitoba on the Shellmouth Reservoir, also called Lake of the Prairies, in the Assiniboine River valley near the Saskatchewan border, roughly 20 km north-west of Russell and reached from Highway 83 (confirm distances). The valley here is a deep, wide cut through the prairie, with steep wooded slopes of oak, aspen and shrubs falling to a long reservoir created by the Shellmouth Dam in the 1960s. The park is a recreation hub with a downhill ski hill, a campground, beaches, boat launches, hiking trails, a golf course and a view of the dam spillway (confirm facilities). Anglers come for walleye, northern pike and perch, and families come for the water. White-tailed deer, coyotes, ospreys and many songbirds use the valley, and the dam is a fine place to see how the river is managed. A vehicle park pass is needed (confirm the price), and the park is busy on summer weekends and winter ski days.
