Ashland Nature Center

Private Nature Preserve And Education Center That Serves As Headquarters Of The Delaware Nature Society, A Nonprofit Founded In 1964, In The Red Clay Creek Valley Near Hockessin · Hockessin, Delaware

Ashland Nature Center is the headquarters of the Delaware Nature Society, a nonprofit founded in 1964, set on roughly a hundred-plus acres of woods, meadows and marsh along the Red Clay Creek near Hockessin in northern New Castle County. It is modest and local rather than grand: a small visitor center with exhibits and bird feeders, a few buildings used for classes and camps, and several short marked trails that climb through hardwood forest, cross open meadows on a hillside and drop to the floodplain and wetlands along the creek. At the entrance, Barley Mill Road crosses the Red Clay Creek on the Ashland Covered Bridge, one of Delaware's last covered bridges and a favorite photo stop. The society runs family programs, guided walks, maple sugaring in late winter and summer camps here, and in autumn volunteers have kept a hawk watch on the hill counting migrating raptors - confirm. Trails have generally been free or by donation, the visitor center keeps limited hours, and dogs have not been allowed on the trails - confirm. It pairs well with Mt. Cuba Center and Auburn Heights nearby.

The trails have generally been open daily from roughly dawn to dusk and free to walk, with a donation box or suggested donation - confirm current rules and any trail fee for non-members. This is not a state park, so there is no state vehicle fee. The visitor center keeps much shorter hours, typically weekday business hours and limited weekend hours, and is closed on major holidays - confirm before counting on restrooms or exhibits. Programs, guided walks, maple sugaring days and camps run on their own schedules and usually need advance registration and a fee. When camps or large school groups are on site, parking and some trails near the buildings can be busy or closed to the public. Trails near the creek can close after floods or storms. The autumn hawk watch has run roughly September to November, weather permitting - confirm. Dogs have not been allowed on the trails, service animals aside - confirm the current rule.
