Assy-Turgen Plateau and Observatory

The Assy Turgen Astrophysical Observatory And Its Alpine Plateau: A High Flat Grassland With Grazing Herds, Views Over The Ili Alatau, And Some Of The Darkest Skies Within Reach Of Almaty. Public Access Depends On The Observatory And The Road. · Esik, Almaty Region

Assy-Turgen is a high alpine plateau at about 2,600 m in the Ili Alatau, roughly 100 km east of Almaty above the Turgen gorge. It has wide summer meadows, grazing herds, long mountain views and some of the darkest skies within reach of the city. A Soviet-era astrophysical observatory stands on the plateau. Be clear about that last point: the observatory is a working science site, not a visitor attraction, and access to it, or to the area around it, may need permission, so confirm before you go. The trip suits hardy travellers with a 4WD and a driver, stargazers and photographers, not casual day trippers. The road is long and rough, nights are cold even in July, and weather turns fast. It is worth it for dark skies in new-moon periods and for meadow views in summer. Light from Almaty glows low on the western horizon. Skip it in rain, snow or low cloud, and do not go without a plan for the cold.

High mountain plateau at about 2,500 to 2,800 m above the Turgen gorge, 100 km east of Almaty, reached by a long mountain road or a hike, with a Soviet-era observatory on the plateau, Esik, Almaty Region, Kazakhstan

The plateau is open mountain land with no posted visiting hours, so people go in daylight and, for stargazing, overnight. The observatory is a working science site with its own rules, and public access, if any, is by arrangement only. The road is usually passable only from late spring to early autumn and can close with snow, mud or washouts. Checkpoints or permit rules may apply. Treat all access as unconfirmed: ask a local driver, a guide or the observatory before you set out.
