Astana Botanical Garden

A Modern Botanical Garden In The Capital, Opened In The 2000s And Still Maturing, With Open Air Collections Of Trees That Survive The Astana Winter And A Glasshouse For Warm Climate Plants. Pleasant In Summer, Shut Down In Deep Winter. · Astana, Astana

The Astana Botanical Garden is a large public garden on the left bank of the Ishim River in the capital, with open-air plantings of trees that survive the Astana winter, a rose garden and a glasshouse for warm-climate plants. It suits families, couples and visitors already in Astana with a free afternoon, and it gives a green, quiet break from the glass towers and wide avenues. Be honest about it: the garden is young and still maturing, so many trees are small and the collections are modest beside the old gardens of Europe or even Almaty. It is a pleasant walk, not a reason to travel. In deep winter the open grounds lie under snow, paths may be unploughed and most of it is effectively shut, with temperatures far below freezing. Late spring to early autumn is the time to go. Allow an hour or two, pair it with the nearby riverbank and city sights, and skip it if the weather is wet or bitterly cold, when the glasshouse alone will not justify the trip.

Opening hours are not fixed in this record and change by season. In summer the grounds are normally open from morning into the early evening, while glasshouses and ticketed areas often keep shorter hours and may close one day a week. In deep winter much of the garden is closed or only partly open because of snow and cold, and some paths are not cleared. Confirm current hours, which areas are open and any entry price with the garden or your hotel before you go, especially from November to March.
