Atlantic City Boardwalk

Promenade · Atlantic City, New Jersey

THE FIRST BOARDWALK IN THE WORLD, laid in 1870 because hotel owners were tired of sand being tracked through their lobbies, and every other boardwalk on earth is named after this one. Four miles of it run along the beach past casinos, arcades, fudge shops and the piers. THE MONOPOLY BOARD IS THIS CITY — Boardwalk, Park Place, Marvin Gardens and the rest are Atlantic City streets, which is why a place of about 38,000 people is known in every country that has ever bought the game. It has boomed, collapsed, been rebuilt and collapsed again, and it is still the most recognised name in New Jersey.

Boardwalk, Atlantic City, New Jersey, 08401, United States

A public boardwalk, open at all hours and free, with the beach free as well — unusual on the Jersey Shore, where most towns sell beach tags. Shops, arcades and piers generally run late morning to evening in season, longer at weekends; casinos run around the clock and are 21-and-over with ID enforced. MUCH OF THE FRONTAGE SHUTTERS FROM ABOUT NOVEMBER TO MARCH and stretches of the boards are close to empty off season. Beach swimming is lifeguarded in summer only. Sections close during ocean storms.
