Atomium

The 102 M Steel Model Of An Iron Crystal Magnified 165 Billion Times, Built For Expo 58 And Now Brussels'S Emblem, With Exhibitions Inside The Spheres And A Panoramic Top Sphere · Brussels, Brussels-Capital Region

The Atomium is a 102 m steel structure in the Heysel district of northern Brussels, shaped like the unit cell of an iron crystal magnified about 165 billion times. It was built for Expo 58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair, as a symbol of faith in science and the peaceful atom, and it was meant to stand for only six months. It stayed, became the emblem of the city, and was restored in the early 2000s with new stainless-steel cladding. Nine spheres, each about 18 m across, are joined by tubes containing escalators and stairs; a fast lift climbs the central tube to the top sphere, where windows look out over Brussels. The lower spheres hold exhibitions about Expo 58 and the building, plus temporary shows. People come for the strange architecture, the views and the photo from the esplanade. The honest caveat: the interior exhibitions are modest, queues for the lift can be long, and many visitors find the outside and the night lighting more impressive than the paid visit.

Place de l'Atomium / Atomiumplein, Heysel (Laeken), northern Brussels, beside Mini-Europe, Brussels, Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium

The Atomium is usually open every day of the year, roughly 10 am to 6 pm, with last entry about 30 minutes before closing and occasional changes for events or maintenance - check the current schedule. It is one of the few big Brussels sights that stays open on Mondays. The outside and the esplanade are free at any hour, and the spheres are lit up after dark. Tickets are sold online for a dated time slot and at the desk; weekend afternoons and school holidays bring long queues, so book online a day or more ahead in summer. Getting there: take the STIB/MIVB metro to Heysel/Heizel station, then walk about five minutes; trams also serve Heysel. Driving means entering the Brussels Low Emission Zone, where foreign cars must usually be registered in advance; there is paid parking near the site.
