Audubon Aquarium and Insectarium
Aquarium · New Orleans, Louisiana
The riverfront aquarium at the foot of Canal Street, opened in 1990 as the Aquarium of the Americas and reopened in 2023 with the Audubon Insectarium moved in beside it under one ticket. Its strength is that it is a REGIONAL aquarium rather than a general one — the Gulf of Mexico tank built around a replica oil rig, the Mississippi River gallery with its white alligator, and a Caribbean reef tunnel are all about the water this city sits in. It lost most of its fish to a generator failure after Hurricane Katrina and rebuilt from donated stock.

Open most days with shorter winter hours and some seasonal closures; check before travelling. ONE TICKET HAS COVERED BOTH THE AQUARIUM AND THE INSECTARIUM SINCE THE 2023 REOPENING — the Insectarium is no longer a separate site on Canal Street.
