Audubon Zoo

Zoo · New Orleans, Louisiana

Fifty-eight acres inside Audubon Park uptown, under live oaks, and a zoo with a genuinely unusual history: in the early 1970s it was named among the worst in the country, and the city rebuilt it so thoroughly that within a decade it was winning national awards. The exhibit worth crossing town for is the Louisiana Swamp — a reconstructed bayou with cypress, a Cajun camp and WHITE ALLIGATORS, which are real leucistic animals descended from a nest found in the marsh in 1987 and exist essentially nowhere else.
