Ausable Chasm

Gorge · Ausable Chasm, New York

A sandstone gorge up to 200 feet deep cut by the Ausable River on its way to Lake Champlain, opened to the public in 1870 and therefore one of the OLDEST TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES. It is privately operated, sits just outside the Adirondack High Peaks, and is known regionally as the Little Grand Canyon of the East — a phrase used by a lot of gorges and more defensible here than at most.
