Austin Creek State Recreation Area

State Park · Guerneville, California

Austin Creek State Recreation Area lies in western Sonoma County above Guerneville and the Russian River, and it is reached through Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, a separate unit next door - confirm the entry arrangement. About 5,700 acres is a good guide to the scale: a larger back-country park of oak woodland, grassy ridges, chaparral and deep ravines that feels dry, open and sunny after the shaded redwoods below. It has hiking and horse trails - confirm names and rules - a campground on the ridges and a steep, winding access road that is the first test of the day. Summers are hot and dry, ticks and rattlesnakes are normal, and black bears and mountain lions live here though they are rarely seen. It suits fit hikers, riders and campers who want space, and it is not a park for a quick stroll, a swim or a trailer. Start early, carry water and expect heat, steep ground and little shade on most trails.

California State Parks has generally run Austin Creek as a day-use park from about sunrise or early morning until sunset, with the campground on its own check-in and check-out times - confirm the current hours, the day-use fee and where it is collected, since the entrance has been shared with Armstrong Redwoods. The steep access road can close in storms, after fires or during repairs, and late summer fire danger can close trails or the whole unit. Winter rain makes the road and trails slick. Cell signal is patchy or absent in the ravines. Check the State Parks page and local alerts on the morning you go.
