Avanos

A River Town Famous For Pottery Made From The Red Clay Of The Kizilirmak, With Dozens Of Workshops Where Visitors Can Try The Wheel, A Hair Museum, An Old Riverside Quarter And A Stone Bridge. A Craft Stop On A Cappadocia Trip, With Pottery Sold From Small Family Studios · Avanos, Nevsehir

Avanos is a river town of roughly 15,000 people on the banks of the Kizilirmak, the Red River and the longest river within Turkiye, about 18 km north of Goreme and 10 km from Uchisar in Cappadocia. Its fame is pottery: potters have shaped the red clay of the riverbed here since ancient times, and today dozens of family workshops make jugs, bowls, plates and decorative pieces, many of them glazed in blue, green and brown. Visitors can usually watch a potter at the wheel, and several studios let you sit down and try it yourself, often with a small fee or a purchase (confirm). The town also holds a famous hair museum, an odd collection of locks left by women visitors, run from a pottery cave (confirm). A stone bridge crosses the river, and an old quarter of stone houses climbs the slope behind the waterfront. Avanos is a craft stop rather than a sight, so plan about half a day with a meal by the river.

Summer weekends bring bus parties from Goreme, while January and February are quiet and some shops close.
