Awenda Provincial Park

A Forest And Beach Park On Georgian Bay With Sandy Shores, Cliffs, Hardwood Trails, A Large Campground And A Visitor Centre. A Quiet And Wooded Family Park Near Midland And Penetanguishene, On The Wye Marsh Side Of The Bay · Penetanguishene, Ontario

Awenda Provincial Park occupies a forested corner of the Penetang Peninsula on the Georgian Bay shore, about 10 km north of Penetanguishene and roughly 150 km north of Toronto, a drive of about two hours (confirm distances). Its name comes from an Ojibwe word often translated as the place of the land or home, and the park is known for hardwood forest of maple and beech, sandy beaches with warm shallow water, a wooded bluff and a network of trails that wind among small lakes and wetlands. Evidence of the Wendat people who farmed and fished here centuries ago adds a deeper layer, and signs along the trails explain it. A large campground sits in the woods behind the shore, a visitor centre offers displays and summer programs, and backcountry sites reward hikers. The park is quiet compared with Wasaga Beach, and it suits families, birders, hikers and cyclists. A vehicle permit is needed for day use (confirm the price).

Awenda is open for day use through much of the year, but the visitor centre, beach facilities and summer programs generally run from about late May to early October, so confirm dates with Ontario Parks before a spring or autumn trip. The gate is usually staffed in the daytime, and campers follow arrival and departure times set by the reservation system (confirm). In winter, parts of the road are plowed only to certain car parks, while trails stay open for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when snow allows. Beaches are rarely supervised, and the busiest summer weekends fill the day-use areas by late morning.
