B&O Railroad Museum
National Historic Landmark · Baltimore, Maryland
The birthplace of American railroading, on the Mount Clare site in west Baltimore where the Baltimore and Ohio — the first common-carrier railroad in the United States, chartered in 1827 — began. The centrepiece is an 1884 roundhouse, twenty-two sided and a hundred and twenty-three feet high, which was the largest circular industrial building in the world when it was built and now has locomotives arranged around its turntable like spokes. The collection of nineteenth-century American railroad equipment here is the most important anywhere.
