Baden-Baden
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Great Spa Towns Of Europe (2021). Hot Springs Rise Under The Town At Roughly 68 Degrees Celsius And Have Been Bathed In Since The Romans; The Friedrichsbad, The Caracalla Baths, The Casino And One Of Europe'S Largest Concert Halls All Sit Within A Few Streets · Baden-Baden, Baden-Wurttemberg
Twelve springs rise under the Florentinerberg at roughly 68 degrees Celsius, and the whole town is an answer to them. The Romans bathed here first and the ruins of their soldiers' baths are still shown under the modern spa quarter; the nineteenth century built the rest, when half of European society came for the water, the gambling and the concerts. What survives is an unusually intact set of those buildings within a few streets of each other: the Friedrichsbad of 1877, where you are led through a seventeen-stage circuit with no swimsuit at all, the swimsuit-and-sauna Caracalla next door, the colonnaded Trinkhalle, a casino Marlene Dietrich called the most beautiful in the world, and one of Europe's largest concert halls built into the old railway station. In 2021 it was inscribed with ten other spa towns from Bath to Vichy as the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Come for a full day and treat the park walk along the Oos as part of the cure rather than as filler between baths.

The two bath houses open daily, year round, including most public holidays, with the Friedrichsbad on a shorter day than the Caracalla and both normally admitting last entry some hours before closing. Which days the Friedrichsbad circuit is mixed and which are separated by sex has changed more than once, so confirm it for your date rather than for last season. The casino opens in the afternoon for gaming and runs guided morning tours of the rooms when no play is on. The Trinkhalle colonnade is open ground you can walk at any hour for nothing. The station is about four kilometres out at Oos, with a frequent bus into the spa quarter; on-street parking in the centre is metered and the garages are easier. Book nothing except a soap-brush massage slot and, in season, a Festspielhaus seat.
