Badlands National Park

National Park · Interior, South Dakota

Two hundred and forty-two thousand acres of sharply eroded buttes, spires and banded pinnacles standing out of the largest undisturbed mixed-grass prairie in the United States. The rock is a layered record of sixty-five million years and it is eroding fast enough to keep producing fossils. The South Unit lies within the Pine Ridge Reservation and is co-managed with the Oglala Sioux Tribe, whose history here includes the 1890 Wounded Knee massacre just south of the boundary.

25216 Ben Reifel Road, Interior, South Dakota, 57750, United States

Open 24 hours a day, year round. An entrance fee applies per vehicle, valid seven days, and America the Beautiful passes are accepted. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center is open daily with seasonal hours; the White River Visitor Center in the South Unit is seasonal and limited. ⚠ THE SOUTH UNIT IS CO-MANAGED WITH THE OGLALA SIOUX TRIBE and is largely undeveloped, with very different access.
