UNESCO World Heritage Site: Baekje Historic Areas (2015) Sites In Gongju, Buyeo And Iksan · Gongju, South Chungcheong

The Baekje Historic Areas are eight sites in three towns of central-western Korea, inscribed by UNESCO in 2015, that preserve what is left of the late capitals of Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms, traditionally dated from 18 BC until its fall to Silla and Tang China in 660 AD. After losing its first capital near Seoul in 475, Baekje moved to Ungjin, today's Gongju, and in 538 to Sabi, today's Buyeo. In Gongju, the earthen and stone walls of Gongsanseong fortress run along a ridge above the Geum river, and the Songsan-ri tombs include the Tomb of King Muryeong, found intact in 1971 with its epitaph stones and thousands of treasures, now in Gongju National Museum. In Buyeo, Busosanseong fortress climbs to Nakhwaam cliff and the Goransa hermitage over the Baengma river, and Jeongnimsa keeps its five-storey stone pagoda. Buyeo National Museum holds the gilt-bronze incense burner. A third area lies at Iksan, with the Mireuksa temple site. Gongju and Buyeo are about 40 minutes apart by bus, and both are reached from Seoul by intercity bus.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: Gongsanseong and Busosanseong open daily from about 9 am to 6 pm, with shorter winter hours and last entry about an hour before closing; Gongsanseong's walls may be lit in the evening. Gongju and Buyeo National Museums open about 9 am to 6 pm and have usually closed on Mondays and on New Year's Day, with last entry about 30 minutes before closing. The Songsan-ri tombs and Jeongnimsa keep similar hours. The traps that ruin a day are Monday museum closures, trying to do both towns in one day, the last river boat leaving before you finish Busosan, and the long transfer from Gongju KTX station. Confirm current times before relying on them.
