Bahá'í House of Worship

Temple · Wilmette, Illinois

The oldest surviving Bahá'í House of Worship in the world and the only one in North America, standing on the Wilmette lakefront north of Chicago. Ground was broken in 1921 and it took until 1953 to finish: a nine-sided dome faced in a lacework of cast concrete and clear quartz that reads as carved stone and was in fact poured. Nine doors face nine directions, everyone is admitted regardless of faith, and there is no charge.
