Bahia de los Angeles
A Small Fishing Village On A Calm Bay In The Gulf Of California, A Base For Whale Shark Season From June To October, Kayaking Among Islands, Fishing And Sea Bird Colonies. Isolated, With A Handful Of Simple Hotels And Campgrounds, Hot In Summer And Quiet The Rest Of The Year · Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California
Bahia de los Angeles is a small fishing village on a wide, calm bay on the Gulf of California coast, reached by a long spur road off Highway 1 near Guerrero Negro. The bay is dotted with islands, including Isla Coronado (Smith) and a chain of sea-bird colonies, and between about June and October it fills with whale sharks, the huge plankton-feeding fish that visitors can see and, with licensed boat operators, swim alongside under set rules. It is also a quiet place for kayaking, fishing, camping and stargazing. Facilities are basic: a few simple hotels, RV camps and restaurants, with cash and fuel not always reliable. It suits self-sufficient travellers who like empty places. It is worth the detour in whale shark season; outside it, the long drive and summer heat are not for everyone. Come with fuel, cash and water, and with time to let the bay slow you down; a rushed overnight stop wastes the journey.

The village is open all year, but most services are tied to the seasons and to tourism, so some restaurants and hotels close for part of the quiet months. Whale shark boats run in daylight, usually mornings, in season from about June to October, and licensed operators set their own times. Walking the beach and watching the bay are FREE at any hour. Boat trips are CLOSED when wind is strong, and some shops and the village fuel supply may shut early or run out. Bank machines, if any, can be CLOSED or empty, so bring cash.
