Bai Tu Long Bay
The Quieter Bay Next To Ha Long, With The Same Limestone Karsts, Some 700 Islands And Far Fewer Boats. Bai Tu Long National Park (2001) Protects Part Of It, With Quan Lan And Minh Chau Islands Offering Beaches And Homestays. Reached By Boat From Van Don And By Overnight Cruise From Hai Phong Or Ha Long · Van Don, Quang Ninh
Bai Tu Long Bay is the quieter neighbour of Ha Long Bay, running north-east along the coast of Quang Ninh province. It shares the same limestone karsts, green water and hidden lagoons, with roughly 700 islands, but receives far fewer boats and far fewer people. Part of it is protected as Bai Tu Long National Park, set up in 2001. Most visitors start at Van Don harbour or Cai Rong, and the main islands to stay on are Quan Lan, with its long pale beaches, and Minh Chau, with a quiet shore and fishing villages. You can take a day boat, sleep on an overnight cruise, or base yourself in a beach homestay. The bay is not a polished resort. Facilities on the islands are basic, the water is not as clear as in the tropical south, and mist or monsoon weather can cancel boats and spoil the views. Cruise operators vary widely in quality, and boats sell out in high season. Ha Long Bay is its own row and appears here only as a nearby place. Come for calm water, empty viewpoints and simple seafood, not for nightlife.
