Balanced Rock

Rock Formation · Buhl, Idaho

A wind-carved column of volcanic rock in Salmon Falls Creek Canyon south-west of Buhl, over forty-eight feet tall and weighing about forty tons, standing on a pedestal that measures three feet by seventeen inches. That is the whole of it and it is enough - the thing looks impossible from every angle, and it has been photographed by everyone who has ever driven the six miles north-west out of Castleford to see it. The BLM Jarbidge Field Office manages the rock and Twin Falls County runs the small picnic park in the canyon below.

Balanced Rock Road, Buhl, Idaho, 83316, United States

Open at all times and completely FREE - there is no gate, no fee, no staff and no facilities of any kind at the rock. ⚠ THE DIRECTIONS ARE THE DIFFICULT PART AND THE OFFICIAL MAP LINK IS WRONG: the BLM's own page carries a map pin that resolves near Hammett, about 120 miles away, where a second Balanced Rock Road exists. USE THE WRITTEN DIRECTIONS - from Buhl follow the signs to Castleford, then six miles north-west through farmland. Managed by the BLM Jarbidge Field Office, 2536 Kimberly Road, Twin Falls. Balanced Rock Park, the small picnic ground in the canyon below, is run by Twin Falls County and is also free. ⚠ There is no water, no restroom and no shade at the rock, the roads in are minor and poor after rain or snow, and mobile coverage is limited.
