Baldha Garden
Botanical Garden · Dhaka, Dhaka
The connoisseur's garden of Old Dhaka: two walled enclosures at Wari - Cybele and Psyche, named by their maker - begun in 1909 by Narendra Narayan Roy Chowdhury, the plant-obsessed zamindar of Baldha, who spent decades and a fortune assembling rare species from across the world into a few dense acres. Century plants, water lilies, a sundial, glasshouse survivals and specimen trees crowd paths built for botany rather than promenade; Rabindranath Tagore visited and the Camellia here is linked by tradition to his poem of that name. Small, layered and slightly secret, it is the anti-Mirpur: not scale but intensity.
Baldha Garden Lane, Wari, Dhaka, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Open daily through daylight hours, roughly 8-9 AM to 5 PM by season, with a small gate ticket (recalled BDT 20-40, UNVERIFIED for 2026); both walled enclosures - Cybele and Psyche - are included, and asking the gate which door is which saves missing half the garden. Early morning is its best hour.
