Balneário Camboriú
Skyscraper Beach City On The Santa Catarina Coast, Known For Its Dense High Rise Seafront And Heavy Argentine And Paraguayan Summer Tourism · Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina
Balneário Camboriú is a beach city on the central coast of Santa Catarina, split off from neighbouring Camboriú as its own municipality in 1964. It is known across Brazil for one thing above all: a curve of beach backed by a solid wall of apartment towers, including some of the tallest residential buildings in the country. The towers are so tall and so close that they cast long shadows over the sand from the afternoon, a problem the city tried to ease around 2021 by pumping in sand to widen the Praia Central far out into the bay. The result divides opinion, but the beach is now broad and busy. Along it runs Avenida Atlântica, with bars, restaurants and a promenade that stays lively late into the night. A cable car climbs from the southern end over forested hills to the small Laranjeiras beach, and the lit Cristo Luz statue looks down on the city. In January and February the city fills with Argentine, Paraguayan and Uruguayan visitors, prices rise and the traffic stops. Beto Carrero World, a large theme park, lies about forty minutes north.

The beach and the promenade are open to everyone at all hours, and the city runs all year, but its rhythm changes sharply with the season. The high season runs from Christmas to Carnival, peaking in January, when hotels fill, restaurants take long queues, beach chairs appear early and the traffic on Avenida Atlântica and the approach from the BR-101 can stop for hours; New Year's Eve fireworks draw very large crowds. From March to November the city is quieter and cheaper, winter days can be cold and grey, and some beach kiosks and seasonal businesses shorten hours or close. The Unipraias cable car and park run in the daytime most of the year but close in storms and strong wind and may keep reduced days off season - confirm. The Cristo Luz is lit in the evening. Nightclubs mostly open from Thursday to Saturday, and much more often in summer. Lifeguard posts are staffed fully in summer and more thinly off season. Book summer accommodation and any Beto Carrero World trip well ahead.
