Baltimore Basilica
National Historic Landmark · Baltimore, Maryland
The first Roman Catholic cathedral built in the United States, raised between 1806 and 1821 for John Carroll, the country's first Catholic bishop. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of the United States Capitol, designed it without charging a fee and offered Carroll a choice of a Gothic scheme or a neoclassical one; Carroll chose neoclassical, and the result is widely held to be among the finest neoclassical church interiors anywhere. A restoration completed in 2006 reopened the twenty-four skylights in the dome that Latrobe designed and later generations had covered over.
