Baltimore Museum of Art
Art Museum · Baltimore, Maryland
A free encyclopedic museum in Charles Village whose single greatest holding came from two Baltimore sisters. Claribel and Etta Cone began buying from Matisse and Picasso directly, in their Paris studios, from 1905 — introduced by their friend Gertrude Stein — and kept buying for forty years. The Cone Collection they left the city contains around five hundred works by Matisse and is one of the most important concentrations of his work anywhere in the world. Admission has been free since 2006.
