Ban Gioc Waterfall
The Largest Waterfall In Vietnam By Flow And One Of The Largest Transnational Waterfalls In The World, Shared With China (Detian Falls). About 300 M Wide And 30 M High, With Rafting On The Quay Son River Below It. Part Of The Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark (2018). · Trung Khanh, Cao Bang
Ban Gioc is a wide, tiered waterfall on the Quay Son river in Cao Bang province, about 300 m across, with the river itself forming the border with China. Visitors see it from the Vietnamese bank, among limestone hills, rice fields and bamboo, and a small bamboo raft takes you to the foot of the falls. The Chinese side has its own raft and the two never cross the border line, and the falls there are called Detian. The setting is part of the Cao Bang Geopark. It is a long trip: Cao Bang town is about 6-7 hours from Hanoi by limousine van or sleeper bus, then about 2 hours and 85 km further to the falls. Water is highest after rain in September to November, and thin in the dry months. It is a border zone, so carry your passport. Plan at least one night nearby, in a homestay at Dam Thuy or Trung Khanh, and treat the falls as one stop in a wider loop. The road is long but much improved, and few foreign visitors come. Check the water level before you go, because the dry months show only a thin veil, and bring cash, as cards are rarely taken here.

The falls viewing area is open in daylight all year, and the bamboo rafts run in daytime when the water and weather allow, with a modest fee. Nguom Ngao cave and the Pac Bo site keep their own daytime hours and tickets. Border-zone checks can close an area at short notice, so confirm locally.
