Banco Chinchorro and Mahahual

Reserva De La Biosfera (CONANP) · Mahahual, Quintana Roo

The far southern Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, a long way from the Cancun crowds. Offshore lies Banco Chinchorro, the largest coral atoll formation in Mexico - a reef ring roughly 40 km long, a biosphere reserve since 1996, scattered with shipwrecks and with American crocodiles living on its low cays. Reaching it means a permitted, weather-dependent boat trip, usually from Xcalak or Mahahual, and the wrecks are protected, so you look and do not take anything. On the mainland, Mahahual is a small fishing village with a sandy malecon that doubles as the Costa Maya cruise port: on ship days the waterfront fills with day visitors, and on other days it is almost empty and very peaceful. Shore snorkelling on the reef just off the beach is easy and free. Sargassum seaweed hits this coast hard in some years and can bury the sand, so check recent reports before booking. Quiet, cheap and slow, it rewards a few spare days. Allow extra days for sea conditions.
