Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Bandhavgarh National Park And Tiger Reserve · Umaria, Madhya Pradesh

A compact tiger reserve in the Vindhya hills of eastern Madhya Pradesh, with one of the highest densities of tigers in India, which makes it among the most reliable places in the country to see one. The landscape is sal forest, bamboo, grassy meadows and rocky hills, dominated by the cliffs of Bandhavgarh Fort, an ancient hill fort said to date back two thousand years, with a huge reclining Vishnu, the Shesh Shaiya, carved beside a spring below it. The reserve was once the hunting ground of the maharajas of Rewa, and the first white tiger known to science was captured in the wider region in 1951, which is why the name comes up in stories of white tigers. Safaris run in open gypsies in three core zones, Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli, with permits booked online and Tala the most sought after. Beyond tigers there are leopards, sloth bears, gaur, and many birds. The core CLOSES for the monsoon, roughly July to September. The nearest railway stations are Umaria and Katni, and it pairs easily with Kanha on a central India circuit.
