Bannack State Park
National Historic Landmark · Dillon, Montana
The best-preserved ghost town in Montana and the state's first territorial capital, on Grasshopper Creek where gold was found in 1862. Within a year there were three thousand people, and within a few years almost none. Around sixty buildings still stand — a hotel, a schoolhouse, a Masonic lodge, cabins, the jail — unrestored and mostly unfurnished, and you walk into them. Nobody lives here and nothing is sold here. Sheriff Henry Plummer was hanged a few hundred yards away in January 1864 by the vigilantes he may or may not have deserved.
4200 Bannack Road, Dillon, Montana, 59725, United States
The town is open year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, but the visitor centre and full services run roughly May to September and winter access depends on four miles of gravel road. THERE IS NO FOOD, SHOP OR WATER FOR SALE ANYWHERE ON SITE — bring everything. Bannack Days is the third weekend of July. Occasional ghost walks and candlelight tours are ticketed separately.
